Subaru Rally Team USA drivers Dave Mirra and David Higgins couldn't be more excited to unleash their Subarus this weekend. For X Games veterans like Dave Mirra and Travis Pastrana (who is also campaigning a Vermont SportsCar-prepared 2011 Subaru WRX STI), the event will be an opportunity to once again compete in a familiar and exhilarating venue with the fiercest Subaru they've ever handled. For Subaru Rally Team USA's David Higgins, it will be his first time competing in X Games. Higgins has been having a fantastic year behind the wheel of the #75 WRX STI, in which he shattered the Mt. Washington Hill Climb record, had a podium finish at his first Global RallyCross event, and won the 2011 Rally America National Championship. This week, David Higgins is thrilled at the opportunity to master another racing discipline and bring home one more win for SRT USA.
X Games 17 has something particularly new and exciting for racers this year. For the first time ever, the rally competition will take to the streets of downtown Los Angeles. In previous years, the rally car races have taken place mostly inside gravel-filled stadiums. Now the rally course has been built on the municipal streets surrounding the Staples Center and will be unlike anything seen before. Rocketing up South Figueroa St, hitting 100 MPH in the straights and bridging a 70-foot jump, the rally cars at X Games 17 are certain to put on an unforgettable show. Rally Car racing starts Saturday with cars taking to the streets in a one-on-one elimination battle. On Sunday, the head-to-head action of RallyCross will finalize in a wild eight-lap race with six or more cars tearing through downtown LA at once.
