EV Driving Range Basics
Most electric vehicles, depending on the vehicle type and power of the
battery pack and motor have a range of 200 to 350 miles. In the case of
Subaru's option, the Solterra, it is able to range from 222 to 228 miles, as
the wheel size you choose will impact the range. Knowing your vehicle's range
is important. It will be displayed on your instrument cluster, but you also
want to have an idea of when you need to stop for charging and where to find a
station, especially when out in public. If you find a fast charging station,
you can charge up to about 80 percent in under an hour.Get the Most Out of Your Driving Range
There are a few things you can do to get the most out of your EV
range. The first thing is to maintain a solid speed within road limits. When
you excessively speed, it uses more power and drains the battery quicker. You
should accelerate and brake gradually as sudden braking and accelerating all
the time will take a toll on the battery life.
When able, we advise reducing the heating onboard or the AC to get
things to a comfortable temperature as these systems impact the battery
too.
The Weather and EV Driving Range
We see plenty of agreeable weather around Santa Monica, West
Hollywood, Burbank, Redondo Beach, and Torrance, but if you're cranking the AC
or heat, it can lead to a range reduction. When we do get wet weather or cold
weather there is also a potential performance reduction as systems like the
Solterra's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive are working harder to keep you secure on
the road.
Of course, the impact is minimal in a broader sense, but it's
important to understand your vehicle, as these same factors impact
gasoline-powered cars and SUVs too.
